Awaykin Red Dragon: Made to order combat friendly Scaled LARP half mask

This handmade Dragon scaled hooded mask is built for action, designed for adventure. Designed for active costume performances, these masks are ideal for LARP combat, cosplay, dance, cabaret, festivals, and other environments where you need to fully immerse yourself in character.

Each mask is constructed from tough, flexible foam, creating a lightweight but durable design that is comfortable to wear while being suitable for movement and repeated use. The hood is finished with individually cut and sewn leather scales, creating a highly detailed appearance while remaining soft and suitable for active wear.

Made to Order: Production Time 4–8 Weeks

This design is made to order, meaning your mask will be created specifically for you rather than taken from existing stock.

The current estimated production time is 4–8 weeks, depending on my existing order queue and the complexity of the design.

Please note that production begins when your mask reaches the front of my workshop queue rather than immediately after placing your order.

Each mask is made with the same care and attention I would expect from something I would wear myself, with a focus on creating a practical, comfortable, and durable costume piece.

Leather Scale Hood

Unlike the faux fur versions, these hoods are constructed using individually cut and sewn leather scales layered onto a durable canvas hood. This allows for a wide variety of scale patterns and colour combinations while remaining lightweight, flexible, and suitable for active costume wear.

The scales are made using genuine leather, but I can use vegan options on request. Wherever possible, I use recycled offcuts and scrap leather sourced from other makers to reduce waste, although new leather may be used where specific colours or designs require it.

Leather availability can vary, so some colours may be more limited than others. If you have a particular colour scheme or character design in mind, please get in touch before ordering and I'll be happy to discuss the available options.

Although the hood is made from leather, every material used remains soft and flexible, making these masks suitable for LARP combat and other active performance where rigid costume pieces may not be appropriate.

Colours & Custom Details

Each mask is individually handmade, meaning every piece will have its own unique variations in painting, scale placement, and finish. Your mask will closely follow the example design shown while still having its own character.

Alternative colours can be requested, including natural reptile-inspired palettes, fantasy colour schemes, UV reactive paint, metallic finishes, and other special effects.

If you would like specific unique details added, such as different colours, scars, tattoos, unusual markings, different horns, or other small features, please leave a note with your order or contact me directly.

If you have a full character design or reference image, I can match the design as closely as possible within the limits of the available materials and construction.

Fit & Comfort

Awaykin masks are designed to fit a wide range of head sizes using a wide, adjustable elasticated Velcro strap.

Head circumference: approximately 18–27 inches (46–69 cm)

The hood is designed to drape naturally over the back of the head rather than fit tightly, making it suitable for a broad range of head shapes and sizes.

Neck fastening: approximately 20 inches (51 cm)

If you require a little extra room around the neck, the button fastening can be positioned lower on the hood opening before dispatch.

The canvas hood lining is designed to provide comfort while supporting the weight of the leather scales without compromising flexibility.

Visibility & Breathing

The mask sits close to the face and uses your own eyes for vision, providing approximately 85–90% natural visibility. The main limitations are reduced peripheral vision, particularly when looking down.

Because Awaykin masks are half masks, they allow excellent airflow and unrestricted breathing compared to many enclosed costume designs. The open design also helps the wearer communicate clearly while staying in character.

Glasses

Because Awaykin masks sit close against the face, glasses can be one of the more difficult considerations.

Whether glasses will work depends on the individual frame style and your own comfort. Some wearers are able to wear their glasses comfortably under the mask, while others find it does not work well for them.

Smaller round frames and sports-style glasses often work better, but I cannot guarantee compatibility with a specific pair of glasses. If you have concerns, please contact me before ordering.

Care & Maintenance

Awaykin masks are designed for regular use, and with appropriate care they can last for many years.

Cleaning

• The inside of the mask is lined with a neoprene-style material which can be wiped clean with water, mild detergent, or antibacterial cleaner.

• Avoid getting the mask excessively wet. Although the mask is sealed, the porous structure of the foam can trap moisture. Always allow the mask to dry fully before storing.

• The canvas hood can be gently spot cleaned where necessary. Leather scales should not be soaked or machine washed.

Storage

The foam used in Awaykin masks is flexible and can deform if stored under pressure for long periods. Store your mask somewhere it can keep its natural shape, with gentle support inside the mask if needed.

Water & Sealant

The flexible sealant used to protect the mask may become cloudy in patches when it gets wet. This is temporary. Allow the mask to dry fully and the finish will return to normal.

Natural leather may also change slightly in appearance over time as it ages, developing its own character with use.

Long-term Use

A well-cared-for Awaykin mask can last several years of regular use. Over time, paint, sealant, or individual leather scales may need occasional maintenance, but all components have been selected with repairability in mind.

After events, allow the mask to air out fully before storing it, especially after wearing it for extended periods.
